Why Hunting Should Be Made Illegal - 861 Words

Hunting has always been a fundamental aspect of life throughout human’s history. Thus, it’s widely accepted that hunting animals for food and other similar purposes is normal. However, there has been lots of debate involving the legality of hunting animals for trophies. This essay argues that trophy hunting should be made illegal. It will show two major reasons supporting this main conclusion, involving the negative impacts of trophies hunting on the biological diversity and evolution. It will then examine one main objection relating to the benefits of the activity for animal conservation, but will rebut this objection. The first reason to consider why trophies hunting should be made illegal is that trophies can lead to the extinctions of numerous species, and these mass extinctions are believed to affect the biological diversity tremendously. There are two ways trophy hunting can lead to rapid extinctions of various animals. Firstly, trophy hunters tend to hunt endangered species, which are already at risk of extinction according to their definition. This is due to hunting valuable targets may reward trophy lots of money, and recent studies have shown that endangered species are often seen as high value targets no matter the cause of their rarity (Palazy et al. 2011). For instance, one single bighorn sheep was sold for at least 400,000 US dollars during a private auction (Palazy et al. 2011).
